Marble Wall Mosaics

Twenty-seven mosaic sheets cut from the same travertine, marble and limestone beds that supply our basins. The sheets are mesh-mounted, so they set like an oversized tile rather than piece by piece, and the blasting, distressing and antiquing are done by hand — which is why no two sheets tile out identically.

Formats run from 1x1 and 2x2 squares through 1x2 and 2x4 brick, 2x6 and 4x6 combinations, 6x12 planks and 12x12 hexagon and pattern sheets. Stone runs from pale Troia travertine through silver and distressed finishes to black marble and Emperador brown.

These are natural stone, not glazed ceramic, so they need sealing before grouting and again afterwards; unsealed stone takes grout pigment permanently. Use a white polymer-modified thinset behind the light stones, because grey thinset shows through travertine. Order 10 to 15 per cent over your measured area so cuts come from the same batch, since tone shifts between production runs.

Where these work

Shower walls and tub surrounds are the most common use, followed by kitchen splashbacks and single accent walls in entrances and living rooms. Stone handles wet areas without difficulty provided it is sealed, but it is not a floor product at these formats — the mesh backing and the sheet thickness are specified for vertical work.

If you are matching mosaic to a basin, order both together. The travertine and marble sheets come from the same beds as the basins, so a Troia mosaic and a Troia basin cut in the same period will read as one material; cut months apart, they will not.
