How Marble Sinks Are Made

A marble basin is not made; it is removed from a block. Roughly two thirds of the stone that starts the process ends as dust and offcuts. Understanding that removes most of the confusion about why a solid stone basin costs what it costs, and why no two are alike.

This is the process we run in our own workshop in Denizli, using stone from our own quarry. It is not a general description of the industry, which is mostly assembly of components bought in.

Stage 1: extraction

Blocks are cut from the quarry face with diamond wire saws: a loop of steel cable studded with diamond beads, driven through the rock under water. The output is a rectangular block weighing several tons.

Selection begins here, not later. A block is judged on the direction of the veining, the presence of fissures and the consistency of the ground colour. Two blocks from the same face can be graded very differently, and a block that would be perfectly good for flooring may be useless for a basin, because a fissure that is invisible in a 20 mm tile becomes a fracture line when you hollow a bowl out of the same material.

Stage 2: sawing to size

The block is reduced on a gang saw or a large bridge saw into slabs or into smaller rectangular billets sized for the item to be made. For a basin, this is where the first big decision is taken: which face of the block will become the visible face of the basin. Cut one way and the vein runs across the rim; cut ninety degrees to it and the same block gives a completely different piece.

Cutting is done wet throughout. Water cools the blade and, more importantly, suppresses silica dust, which is the principal occupational hazard in stone work.

Stage 3: coring and hollowing

This is the stage that has no equivalent in ceramic or composite manufacture. The bowl is removed from solid rock. A core drill takes out the bulk of the material, then a CNC router or a hand-guided cutter works the interior down to the intended profile, in successive passes with progressively finer tooling.

It is slow, and it cannot be rushed. Marble at 3 on the Mohs scale is soft enough to cut easily and soft enough to fracture if it is loaded wrongly, and the piece is at its most vulnerable when the walls are thin but not yet finished. This is where losses happen. A block that fails at this stage has already absorbed its extraction, transport and sawing costs.

Stage 4: shaping the exterior

Outer profile, base, rim and any front detail are worked next. Fluting, ribbing and split-face texture are all done at this stage and each adds hours. Fluting in particular is exacting because the grooves must be even along a curved face, and any error is permanent.

On wall-mounted pieces, the backsplash is worked from the same block wherever the design calls for a continuous vein. That single decision governs how large the starting block had to be, and it is the main reason a wall-mounted basin with an integrated splash costs substantially more than a vessel bowl of the same width.

Stage 5: drilling and fitting

The waste hole is cut to a standard drain size, typically 1.75 inches. Overflow channels, tap deck holes and bracket recesses are done here, to the drawing. On a made-to-order piece these positions come from the customer's plumbing rather than from a standard, which is why we confirm dimensions in writing before cutting.

Stage 6: finishing

Honing takes the surface through progressively finer abrasives to a smooth matte. Polishing continues that sequence until the crystal structure reflects light, which is what produces gloss on marble; there is no coating or lacquer involved. That distinction matters: a polished marble surface is the stone itself, which is why it can be restored decades later, and why a polished finish can be dulled chemically by acid.

A penetrating sealer is applied at the end. It soaks into the pores and slows absorption without changing the appearance. It is renewed roughly annually in use, as set out in how to clean a marble sink.

Stage 7: inspection and packing

Each piece is checked for hairline fractures, wall thickness consistency, drain alignment and finish uniformity, then crated with the bowl supported against movement. Impact at a corner is the realistic transit risk, not abrasion, so packing addresses that specifically.

What are the downsides of using marble as a sink?

Seen from the workshop, the honest answer is the same three as from the bathroom, and the process explains two of them. Marble etches because it is calcium carbonate, and no stage of fabrication changes that chemistry. It absorbs because it is porous, which sealing slows but does not eliminate. And it is heavy because a carved basin retains a great deal of solid rock: ours run from about 31 lb to 276 lb, against 25 to 40 lb for a ceramic basin.

What the process also explains is the compensating advantage. Because the piece is one material all the way through, with no coating and no substrate, it can be re-honed and re-polished at any point in its life and return to its original condition. That is not true of any moulded or coated alternative.

Do marble sinks last?

Yes, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of care. There is nothing in a carved basin that can delaminate, because nothing is laminated. There is no gel-coat to wear through, no resin to yellow, no glaze to chip to a different colour beneath. Marble basins over a century old remain in service across Europe.

Why no two are the same

Because the vein was formed by geology, not by a print head. It runs where it runs, and the cut through it decides what you see. Two basins ordered in the same stone on the same day, from different blocks, will differ visibly. In a countertop run that is a fabrication problem. In a single basin it is the reason to buy stone at all.

What "handmade" actually means here

The word is used loosely across the industry, so it is worth being precise. Machines do the heavy and repetitive work in our process: wire saws at the quarry, bridge saws for sizing, core drills and CNC routers for the bulk of the bowl. That is not a compromise. A hand-driven tool cannot hold a wall thickness tolerance across a curved bowl, and a machine cutting under water is safer for the operator than a hand tool making dust.

What is done by hand is everything that requires judgment: reading the block and deciding where to cut, correcting the profile where the vein interacts with the shape, all fluting and carved detail, the final honing sequence, and the inspection. A piece typically passes through several pairs of hands, and the same person does not do all of it.

The distinction that matters commercially is different from either of those. It is whether the seller cut the stone at all. Most companies selling stone basins buy them finished, from a fabricator, from an importer, or from a marketplace, and their contribution is photography and a warehouse. We quarry and carve our own, which is why we can tell you which block a piece came from, and why we can make one to a drawing at all.

The quarry decision that most affects the finished basin

Not the machine, the finish, or the design: the block. A basin cut from an excellent block in a plain stone will look better than one cut from a mediocre block of a famous marble, because what you are looking at across a 20 inch bowl is a very small sample of rock and every flaw is at full scale.

That is the argument for buying from someone who selects their own stone rather than orders finished goods, and it is also the argument for asking to see a photograph of the actual item before it ships. Any supplier who cannot produce one is describing a category rather than an object.
