Marble Sinks for a Powder Room: Which Sizes Actually Fit

6 min read

A powder room basin usually needs to be 15 to 17 inches across, not the 20 to 24 inches that vanity size guides quote. Twenty-nine of the 66 basins in our marble sinks collection measure 17.9 inches or less at their widest, and both made-to-order wall-mount ranges start at 16 inches wide by 14 inches deep. The number that catches people out is height: a carved stone vessel adds its own depth on top of whatever it stands on, and our small bowls run from 2 inches to 6.5 inches tall.

Below are the basins that fit a half bath, their measured dimensions, what the vessel does to your rim height, and when a wall-mounted basin is the only thing that will work.

What size stone basin fits a powder room?

Work from the clear counter run, not from the room. Vanity cabinets are commonly sold at 18, 24 and 30 inches wide, and a basin needs breathing space at each side so it does not sit tight against a wall return or a door casing.

On a 24-inch cabinet, a 16-inch bowl leaves roughly four inches of stone either side. That is the proportion most powder rooms want. These are the measured footprints at the small end of our range:

For comparison, the New York Marble Sink is 24 x 14.2 x 5.9 inches. It is a fine basin and it is the wrong one for a 24-inch cabinet, because it uses the whole top.

Are all bathroom sinks 22 inches wide?

No, and the 22-inch figure is the source of a lot of bad powder room planning. It describes a vanity top with a drop-in or undermount bowl molded into it, which is what the cabinet retailers writing those size guides sell. In that format the basin and the counter are one object, so the cabinet width sets the basin width.

A vessel basin sits on top of a finished surface. Its footprint is independent of the cabinet underneath, which is why a 24-inch vanity can carry a 15.3-inch carved bowl while a 22-inch drop-in would not fit at all. If you are reading a sink size chart and it keeps talking about cabinet widths, it is not describing the thing you are buying. Our guide to what a marble vanity sink actually is separates the three products sold under that one phrase.

What is the smallest marble sink you can buy?

The smallest piece we carve as a stock size is the Orange Onyx basin at 14.8 inches across. In white marble the smallest is the Carrara White at 15.3 inches square; the Rustic Split-Face Marble Sink is 14 by 16.9 inches, so it is narrow in one direction and normal in the other.

On the wall-mounted side, the Calacatta Marble Wall-Mount Sink and the Calacatta Viola Custom Sink both begin at 16 inches wide by 14 inches deep by 6 inches high, at $900, and the fluted front costs the same as the plain one at every size.

Anything smaller than the sizes above is a custom cut rather than a shelf item, and we quote it individually.

Why does a vessel basin change your powder room counter height?

Rim height is counter height plus bowl height. That second number varies more than people expect across our own small basins:

On the same 32-inch counter those four put the rim at 34, 37.1, 37.9 and 38.5 inches. The shallowest and the deepest are four and a half inches apart, which is the difference between a comfortable basin and one a child cannot reach. If the vanity is already built and you cannot change its height, bowl depth is the specification that decides the room. The arithmetic, including tap projection, is set out in how to measure for a marble sink.

Is a 16-inch basin too small to actually use?

A powder room basin washes hands. Footprint matters less than interior depth and where the tap lands over it. A 2-inch bowl under a tall gooseneck faucet will throw water at the rim; the same bowl under a wall-mounted tap set close to the stone behaves. Deeper bowls such as the 5.9-inch Cappuccino or the 6.5-inch Beige Travertine contain a strong flow without any of that care.

Every basin on this page takes a 1.75-inch drain opening, the standard US fitting, so the plumber is not sourcing anything unusual. Shape changes how the interior reads at this size too, which is covered in round, oval or rectangular.

Should a powder room basin be wall-mounted or sit on a counter?

Counter-top is the simpler build. There is no cut-out and no bracket; the bowl sits on the surface and the waste drops through.

Wall-mounting gives back the floor, which is the one thing a small room never has enough of. It needs the wall mount bracket, sold separately from $90 in sizes from 8 to 32 inches and fixed to 2x4 studs rather than drywall. Before you commit to that route, read will your wall hold a marble sink, because the blocking has to go in before the wall closes.

The third option removes the vanity entirely. The Black Pedestal Marble Sink stands 35.89 inches high on a 15.9-inch square footprint at $3,500, so it needs floor rather than wall. What you give up in exchange is covered in marble pedestal sinks: what you gain and what you give up.

What is a good compact sink for a small bathroom?

If the room is dark or windowless, warm stone does more than white. The Honey Onyx Vessel Sink at 16.1 inches across and $1,500 is translucent, so a light near it changes the whole basin. Travertine and beige marble do a quieter version of the same thing for $750 to $850.

If the room is pale and you want one piece of drama, the 15.7-inch Calacatta Viola square at $950 or the 16-inch Calacatta Viola square at $975 carry burgundy veining across a creamy ground. The Gray Marmara Marble Vessel Sink at 15.9 inches and $950 is the restrained version, gray veining on white.

Weight is rarely the problem at this size. The Light Beige basin has a recorded shipping weight of 55 lb and the Cappuccino 33 lb, both within what one person can place. Larger stone is a different conversation, set out in how heavy is a marble sink.

For the design side of a half bath rather than the specification, our 25 powder room ideas covers lighting, wall treatment and tap choice around the basin.

Can a stone basin be cut to fit a narrow powder room vanity?

Yes. The two wall-mount ranges are made to order anywhere from 16 to 40 inches wide, and sizes outside that are quoted through Custom Orders, where you send dimensions or a drawing. Can I get a custom marble sink made explains how the quote works.

One trade-off is worth knowing before you order. A catalog size is covered by our 30-day return policy, where return shipping is the customer's responsibility, a 25% restocking fee is deducted and only full orders can be returned. Custom and personalized pieces made to your own specification are not returnable at all. If you are between two stock sizes, the stock size is the safer order.

What happens after you choose a size

Every basin here is carved from one block in our workshop in Denizli, with no casting, veneer or resin filler, and sealed before it ships. Before cutting starts we send photographs of the actual block selected for your sink, so the veining you approve is the veining that arrives.

Production runs 1 to 4 weeks depending on the piece, with 3 to 4 business days in transit inside the United States, and shipping is free to all 50 states and the District of Columbia with no minimum order value. The full terms are on the shipping policy page.

Measure the clear run on your counter and the rim height you can live with, then browse the full sinks collection and filter by the dimensions on each product page. If nothing in the range is the right width, send us the measurement and we will tell you whether it can be cut.

Frequently asked questions

What size stone basin fits a powder room?

Are all bathroom sinks 22 inches wide?

No. The 22-inch figure describes a vanity top with a drop-in or undermount bowl molded into it, so the cabinet width sets the basin width. A vessel basin sits on top of the counter, so its footprint is independent of the cabinet: a 24-inch vanity can carry a 15.3-inch carved stone bowl.

What is the smallest marble sink you can buy?

Our smallest stock size is the Orange Onyx basin at 14.8 inches in diameter. In white marble the smallest is the Carrara White at 15.3 inches square, and the Rustic Split-Face measures 14 by 16.9 inches. Both wall-mount ranges begin at 16 inches wide by 14 inches deep at $900.
