A stone tub is a structural decision

An acrylic tub is a finish. A solid stone tub is a load. Ours are carved from a single block and weigh several hundred kilograms empty, and full of water with someone in it the figure roughly doubles. On a ground-floor slab that is nothing; on a timber upper floor it is a conversation with a structural engineer before the order, not after it.

Everything else follows from that. Where it stands has to be decided before the floor is finished, the waste position has to be set before the floor is closed, and the route from the front door to the bathroom has to take the crate. None of it is difficult, but none of it can be solved on delivery day.

Freestanding or soaking, and why we stopped separating them

Every tub we make is both. They stand free of the wall on all four sides and they are carved deep enough to sit in properly rather than lie in, which is what a soaking tub means. What actually differs between models is length, internal depth and the stone, so those are the numbers on the product pages. We used to run two pages for the same five tubs, which helped nobody; this is now the single page for the whole range.

Before the floor is closed

  • Confirm floor loading with a structural engineer on any suspended timber floor.
  • Set the waste position from the tub drawing before the floor is finished.
  • Freestanding taps are floor-mounted; their position is fixed at first fix.
  • Check the delivery route: door widths, stair turns and lift dimensions with the crate.
  • Production is quoted per tub; transit inside the US is 3 to 4 business days after production.

Three things to settle before you order

  • Floor loading

    Empty weight is on the product page. Add roughly 250 to 300 litres of water and an occupant to get the in-use load, then check it against the floor. On a suspended timber floor this needs a structural opinion; on a concrete slab it usually does not.

  • Plumbing rough-in

    The waste position is fixed by the tub, not by the room. Take it from the product drawing before the floor build-up goes down. Freestanding taps are floor-mounted, so their centres are set at first fix and cannot be moved later without lifting the floor.

  • Placement on delivery

    The tub arrives crated on a pallet and is delivered kerbside. Measure the route in, including door widths, the turn at the top of a stair and the internal lift dimensions. Arrange lifting help for the day; this is not a two-person carry.

How heavy is a solid marble bathtub?

Empty weight for this range runs into the hundreds of kilograms and the exact figure for each model is in the Specifications block on its product page. Filled and occupied, expect roughly double. Use the in-use figure, not the empty one, when you check the floor.

Does a stone bath hold heat?

Yes, and better than acrylic. Stone has high thermal mass, so it takes longer to warm up and then holds the temperature for much longer. Running slightly hotter for the first minute is the usual way people deal with the warm-up.

Can it go on an upper floor?

Often, but it has to be checked rather than assumed. Get the in-use load from the product page, give it to a structural engineer with your floor construction, and get an opinion before ordering. A tub cannot be returned once it has been delivered and refused for a reason that could have been checked first.

What taps do I need?

Floor-mounted freestanding tap sets, unless the tub is set against a wall. The tubs are supplied without tap holes, so the tap position is decided by the plumbing rather than by the stone. Confirm the waste and tap centres from the drawing at first fix.

How do I clean and maintain it?

pH-neutral cleaner and a soft cloth, dried after use. Re-seal every 6 to 12 months. Bath oils and acidic products are the two things that damage stone tubs, and etching from acid is physical damage that cannot be cleaned off afterwards.
